Rock Vibrations Entrevista : Costas Varras

(English Below)...

Eu formei uma nova banda e fiz shows lá.

Então estou ouvindo JAZZ, BLUES, Modern RNB, SOUL, POP e CLASSICAL Music!

R: Eu adoraria ir e tocar no Brasil!

R: Eu quero fazer vários shows para promover meu novo álbum Neon-Classical!

Obrigado !! Deus abençoe todos vocês..!!!

Agradeço imensamente a oportunidade desta entrevista e deixo aqui o espaço para futuras contribuições...

=====English=====

In another opportunity that we had thanks to the partnership with the friends of Angels PR of Athens, Greece, I bring here an interview with a great musician of the European rock scene, guitarist, that approached several subjects with us as career, composed songs, and other interesting details for who is a fan of the 6 strings.

Check out the great chat we had:

1 - How did you start your career? I know you have a beautiful musical resume ...

My career started in 1999 when I formed my band PERPETUAL. In 2000 we recorded the first Demo and it turned out to be our first self release. In 2001 we started playing shows mainly in Athens,Greece.

In 2003 with a new Line Up of musicians we recorded the first Full Length Album:”OVERLORD’S PERPETUAL” which was released by Sonic Age Records in 2004.That era I was using the nickname Overlord and not my real name Costas Varras...Anyway…also in 2004 we played more shows in Greece with the highlight  Concert supporting for W.A.S.P. In 2006 I moved to Los Angeles with the goal to get signed by a Major Record Label.
At the begging of the year I was a student at Musicians Institute. M.I. wasn’t my first music school..I started getting lessons when I was 13 years old in Athens.

So back to L.A. time..  within the first 2 years of my residence  i discovered that the audience for my genre of music was way less compare to what I expected before I moved there.

This didn’t stop me though! .I formed a new band and I played shows there. In 2009 I went to Kent,England to record an Album with the legendary Producer “Chris Tsangarides” a bit later I got sick and I traveled back to Greece for a health treatment. 2 months later I got back to England and I finished all the recordings..i wasn’t happy though about my performance…

Then I demonstrated my recordings to Bob Katsionis and he encouraged me to start from the beginning recordings with him later on. During all these years I played more shows in L.A. and Athens and in 2015 I entered the studio to work with Bob Katsionis . So Neon-Classical turned out to be a great album! I am very pleased about the final product and also I am pleased for the  great musicians that I worked with for that album!

2 - Was the guitar always the instrument to which you pointed and wanted to learn about everything?

Yes absolutely! Electric Guitar is the main musical instrument that I’m playing since I was 12 years old and till now is the main instrument that I love the most and also I want to explore it even more! I think that the knowledge for guitar is endless!

3 - I am also a guitarist, and I appreciate the way people around the world have a passion for the 6 strings ... can being a record by the guitar segment be more challenging from a technical point of view?

To compose music is a challenge anyways! Music is a very special thing! Now if you want to do an instrumental guitar oriented album is a challenge of course! For me the most important thing is that when your technic is at a high level then it has to serve the song!
So I try to express my feelings and my experiences when I write a song.

Also if I can serve the song by playing something simple I don’t mind to doing it! Sometimes even guitar solos have to be simple for expression! Some other times though they have to be very complex!!I like both ways..

4 - Do you usually use what kind of kit to compose? Does your guitar have specific customizations? I must say that for your tone, you should need something very good ...

When I make my demos I work with Cubase on my computer connected with a good external sound card. I also use Marshall Amps.

Now as about my guitar choice I am playing mainly with Fender Stratocasters!! all of them have scalloped necks though..

5 - Speaking about the album "Neon-Classical", we have a great record, great production, rich (and intense in some moments) melodies ... How did you build these songs?

As far as my song writing goes about Neon-Classical I have to admit that almost all the songs are songs that I wrote after the release of Overlord’s Perpetual
So that means that I collected songs in the era between 2005 till 2015.
Each song has a unique story and approach.. but I can’t explain with details about how I built them! The music came out very natural I think!

6 - A record made by guitarist is in my opinion, prepared with an instrument that requires a lot more hearing abilities ... Do you find it difficult to fit vocals and lyrics into their melodies, however accessible they may be?

No I don’t find anything difficult about it! To me it comes out very easily, very spontaneously! Sometimes I write the Lyrics first and then I fit the vocal melody on them.. it depends about the story of the song..

7 - In a review I made about the album recently (which made us have this interview opportunity), I mentioned that guitarists like Malmsteen and Jason Becker would be proud of a work on Neo Classic like yours (in my view) ...
Do you take inspiration from them? What are their influences?

Thank you! I think that Yngwie is going to like my album! Yngwie Malmsteen has influenced all of us, even Jason Becker was playing Black Star when he was a teenager! So Yngwie influenced my lifestyle, my playing and my showmanship on stage!!

So yes since the last 22 years he is my favourite artist! But..on my next album I’ll try to mix some elements from Jazz Rock Fusion(for my solos!!)I want to go further!

8 - You must be a lover on the classic side, and so I think you like a lot, right?
What are your favorite composers in this regard? I say to you that I have an appreciation for Beethoven, Paganini, Pachelbel and Mozart ...

My favourite classical composers are J.S.Bach, Nicolo Paganini and Antonio Vivaldi.

9 - What have you heard lately? Do you like to challenge yourself to listen to new bands and also learn from it?

I might be a true Rocker but I listen to many different genres of music!
As about Rock n’ Roll I’m listening from ZZ TOP to PANTERA and from FLEETWOOD MAC to ARCH ENEMY! So yes I’m listening to Rock and Metal a lot!!

Then I’m listening to JAZZ, BLUES, Modern RNB, SOUL, POP and CLASSICAL Music! So yes I like to get challenged by something new all the time!

10 - What about the European public? Here in South America we tend to be fanatics ...

The European audience is great as well.. but the problem about Greece is that they support bands from other countries! They don’t care so much out the local scene!!

11 - Would you like to do a project with orchestra one day?

Yes I would love to do a project with an orchestra in the future!
I would like to film it live in a concert!!

12 - There are a lot of people saying that Rock has its days counted ... What do you have to say about it? Not wanting to trend, but for me, Rock is very alive ...

There are so many great Rock bands all over the world! Rock music brings so much power and excitement in concerts!

It might not be mainstream now but Rock is the coolest genre of music in my opinion! So as Blackmore said LONG LIVE ROCK n’ROLL…!!

13 - Here in Brazil we have many virtuoso guitar players (such as Kiko Loureiro, who recently joined Megadeth), Edu Ardanuy (who played with Steve Vai) ... Do you know any musicians or Rock / Metal bands that are Do you like our style approach?

I don’t know much about Brazilian Rock but when I was a kid I was listening to SEPULTURA a lot!

14 - Still talking about Brazil, Do you already longed to come to South America? I believe that your playing would be welcome in a big festival like Rock In Rio (which is held every 2 years here)...

I would love to come and play in Brazil! Yngwie filmed a show in Sao Paolo in 1998. I bought this video tape back then! Brazilian fans are great!

I will try to play in Brazil even if it’s not a big Festival like Rock In Rio..!!

15 - I need to share information with you ... Many people around here do not know much about Metal made in some European countries (Greece is a case of them) ...
When they talk about their country, they soon remember Firewind or especially Gus G. (for such a projection when playing with Ozzy Osbourne) ... How is the music scene out there? I have known a lot of bands and I was really impressed with the technique of greeks

Yes we have a lot of Metal bands in Greece specifically in Athens & Thessaloniki.
Our scene though is underground in Greece! Also a few bands from our country are touring Worldwide! One of them is Firewind..!

16 - Over the last few years, we have realized that Europe has become an increasingly beloved place for metalheads (even more so with festivals such as Wacken, HellFest, Rock Am Ring, etc.). I ask this because the US Metal has been solidified also by Europe ...

In Europe metal tends to be more traditional! In US Hard Core is more popular. I know about it cause I lived 6 years in Los Angeles!

17 - What are your next plans with your music career?

I want to play shows to promote my new album Neon-Classical!
We filmed a video clip for the song “Fallen Hero”(you can see it on youtube now)
And my next plan is to do a European Tour to support the Album!

Hopefully some day I’ll come to play in Brazil as well!

18 - I have asked this question to several musicians around the world ... How do you see the issue of Streaming? We know that we Rock fans love the physical media (I am a collector), but it has lost its space be firm and strong again) ... Do you believe that Streaming can take the physical media out of the market one day?

I don’t like streaming! I am a collector as well! I hope that the physical media are going to survive but I don’t know what is going to happen in the future!!

19 - I play for 12 years, however, I did not develop so much in terms of solos, I ended up always prioritizing bases (being a big fan of guys with seminal riffs like Tony Iommi and James Hetfield) ... What tip do you would it be for a musician who is starting or who wants to technically evolve into a guitar?

My advice to someone who starts is to get lessons from experienced musicians! Then try to play your favourite solos from your favourite bands!

Try to listen to music as much as possible! Play guitar everyday for many hours!

20 - Let's finish our conversation here ... Would you like to leave a message?

Thank you for giving me the chance to promote my new album Neon-Classical.
Obrigado!! God Bless you all..!!!

Thank you immensely for the opportunity of the interview and leave here the space for future contributions ...
