Rock Vibrations Entrevista - Tarah Who?

Nas últimas semanas tenho tido alguns contatos interessantes vindos do exterior, mais precisamente do Reino Unido neste caso, e com isso, tive a ótima oportunidade de bater um papo com uma compania chamada "Stencil PR" que presta serviços para inúmeras bandas.

Foi então enviado á mim alguns grupos que iremos divulgar de tempos em tempos, com entrevistas para divulgação...

O grupo abordado nesta primeira entrevista é o trio chamado "Tarah Who?"...

1 - Como iniciaram a banda?
R: TGC: Eu comecei na música quando tinha 14 anos, eu tocava bateria e baixo em diferentes bandas.

Comecei a escrever minhas próprias músicas um pouco depois, mas nunca compartilhei nada.

Eu tinha alguns amigos que tinham vozes legais e compartilhei com eles o que eu escrevia, mas mesmo eles tendo vozes bonitas, não era a interpretação que eu estava procurando.

Eu decidi que cantaria só porque ninguém mais poderia contar minha história, além de mim.

Alguns anos depois, mudei-me para Los Angeles.
Eu estava procurando bandas para tocar bateria e baixo, então eu pensei que, entretanto, eu tentaria tocar minhas músicas.
As pessoas responderam muito bem à minha música, então pensei em fazer uma demo e postar no Myspace!

Alguns produtores e músicos me bateram, querendo me ajudar a fazer um bom produto de som, e é bem assim que tudo começou.

Eu aprendi muito ao longo dos anos, aprendi sobre mim e o som que eu queria.

Eu fiquei cada vez mais confiante sabendo o que eu queria soar e sendo mais confortável ser um líder de uma banda.

Eu conheci Coralie e amei seu jeito de tocar e atitude profissional, nos demos bem logo de cara, e um pouco depois, nosso baixista teve que sair da banda.
Conheci Joey 2 semanas antes de sair em turnê e Joey é a melhor "coisa" que já aconteceu no mundo da Tarah Who?

Eu estou muito agradecido por ter essas duas pessoas na banda, que começaram 1 ano atrás, mas amadureceram com esses dois indivíduos.

JS: Tarah G. Carpenter me contatou via messenger do Facebook ... "Oi Joey, estou entrando em contato com você porque estou procurando um baixista para a minha banda Tarah Who? Se você gosta do que ouve, me retorne. Tenha um bom dia "Tarah ...

A mensagem aleatória parecia estranha e ficou sem resposta por seis dias.

A idéia rolou na minha cabeça o suficiente e eu decidi dar uma escutada.
Duas semanas depois, partimos para um tour pela costa oeste!

2 - Sabemos que todo trio precisa ter muito entrosamento, e, vocês possuem bastante...
Isso aconteceu naturalmente?
R: CH: Na verdade sim!! Nós realmente nos encontramos, eu acho. Nós nos divertimos tocando juntos e eu sei que eles têm minhas costas no caso de eu perder algo na música, por exemplo.
É muito importante, para mim, ter essa conexão com as pessoas com quem você trabalha. Isso torna tudo mais fácil e melhor.

JS: Sim! Coralie Herve! Nós temos suas costas 100% !!! Tem sido um verão incrível e todos nós passamos muito tempo juntos em espaços apertados de carros, trens, aviões, salas de ensaio, estágios humildes e onde quer que pudéssemos descansar a cabeça para a noite. Aprender muito sobre o outro, mas também aprender muito um com o outro, tem sido inspirador.

TGC: Sim, eu concordo com a Coralie e o Joey, foi tudo muito natural. Nós conhecemos Joey e nós o levamos em turnê.
Nós estávamos rindo no outro dia percebendo que tínhamos sorte que Joey não era uma pessoa louca!

Quer dizer, nós não o conhecíamos e o levamos para a estrada para dormir no mesmo quarto que nós, e ir a quilômetros e quilômetros de distância!
Outra coisa que aconteceu naturalmente é que temos uma química muito boa e nos conhecemos muito rápido e intensamente.

Nós passamos por muito estresse e emoções durante essas duas semanas, mas como Coralie mencionou, nós sabíamos que estávamos com os outros de volta.
Dentro e fora do palco, ainda fazemos o dia a dia.
Nós três somos muito maduros e profissionais quando se trata da banda, sabemos que queremos ir além e crescer.

Ter os mesmos objetivos com essa banda ajuda a tomar melhores decisões para nós três. Nós temos uma energia tão boa que, mesmo durante os ensaios, estamos suando e tocando, porque nos divertimos muito tocando juntos.
O desempenho do palco é o mesmo com a energia da multidão em cima disso, estamos no céu!

3 - Gostei do som acessível que fazem... quais seriam as suas influências maiores?
R: JS: Minha influência vem da minha jornada de tentar entender meu lugar na mistura.
Baixistas como Ray Brown ou Lemmy Kilmister, que eu acho que nunca tocaram uma nota que não precisaram, me inspiram a tocar com propósito.
Em Tarah Who ?, nós tendemos a misturar vários gêneros em músicas que te mantêm em seus dedos !!!

CH: Eu sou uma grande fã do Nightwish, uma banda de metal sinfônico, e muito rock, banda de metal vou do Evanescence ao Battle Beast, Amaranthe, Arch Enemy...

Eu acho que a Tarah Who? é uma mistura de rock, punk, grunge, alternativo, mas ao mesmo tempo é única. Nós todos, Tarah, Joey e eu, trazemos nosso próprio estilo e influências para a música da Tarah Who.

TGC: Eu cresci ouvindo Alanis Morissette e sei que minhas composições foram influenciadas por suas letras autobiográficas cruas. Então eu descobri, The Distillers, The Foo Fighters, Pantera, Motörhead, Rage Against the Machine, etc...

Então eu acho que todas as bandas dos anos 90 neste gênero influenciaram o meu gosto nos sons.
Nós não tentamos soar como ninguém, nós tocamos nossa música e como nos sentimos, mas tenho certeza que meus ouvidos foram afetados.

4 - Ouvindo seus lançamentos, percebi a evolução natural que ocorreu (acho que vocês também sentem isso)...
Com o tempo passando, fica mais fácil compor?
R: TGC: Primeiro de tudo, obrigada por ter tempo para ouvir... e sim, você está correto. Meu primeiro álbum, eu era muito jovem e tímida.

Não me atrevia a dizer o que gostava ou não gostava.

Eu estava cercada pelo "sabe-tudo" e esse foi o meu erro por não falar. Eu aprendi muito com o processo e não me arrependo. Construiu quem eu sou hoje.
Eu sou melhor e não trocaria essa experiência por nada. Muitos eventos da vida também aconteceram comigo e eu amadureci em minhas histórias.

Meu primeiro álbum é definitivamente mais sobre sair e me sentir o mais confortável possível sobre isso. "Little Out There" tem muita traição por parte dos amigos. Pessoas que realmente me magoaram de maneiras diferentes, me usando principalmente para diferentes tipos de satisfação pessoal.

A música evolui com as emoções, daí a raiva e a mudança nos sons. Eu também estava crescendo, e meus ouvidos e paladar estavam mudando, acho que temos mais de um TARAH WHO? com som e identidade agora e mais do que nunca.

Estou muito feliz por você ter notado essa evolução.

Eu propositadamente deixei esses álbuns por essa razão, eu quero que as pessoas ouçam essa evolução e eu quero que os músicos saibam que é e ótimo crescer.

Você não pode lançar seu primeiro álbum perfeitamente. Eu acho que isso torna as coisas mais interessantes para notar uma mudança e tentar identificá-la.

Você não pode esperar que as bandas sempre soem iguais, não quando são autênticas e artísticas.

5 - Qual o maior desejo de vocês atualmente?
R: CH: Ser capaz de ir à qualquer lugar do mundo e tocar nossa música para todos que quiserem ouvir !!

TGC: Sim, praticamente o mesmo, eu quero fazer tudo, eu adoraria ter um estúdio de gravação e ensaio.
Escrever músicas, gravá-las, tocá-las ao redor do mundo em frente à uma multidão de fãs!

JS: Sim Coralie !!! Basicamente, viver o sonho de seguir a nossa música e não viver dentro de qualquer burocracia! Nós vamos fazer isso sozinhos até fazermos direito !!!

6 - Pretendem lançar algum material em breve ou talvez em 2019?
R: CH: Temos um novo EP, "64 Women" em breve e alguns vídeos também.
Estou muito animada com isso, espero que vocês também gostem !!!

TGC: Jason Orme (Alanis Morissette) está co-produzindo nosso novo EP chamado "64 Women".
Jason co-produziu no ano passado "Half Middle Child Syndrome" e nos divertimos tanto que decidimos fazê-lo novamente este ano.

Jason está atualmente mixando a última música do EP e então eu a enviarei para ser masterizada.
A capa do álbum está sendo feita agora pela Amber Ledet. Ela é uma pintora muito talentosa baseada em Los Angeles (confira sua arte @amberluna e www.artbyamberledet.com).

Estamos muito animados com este novo EP.
Matt Houdini de Lujuria se juntou a nós durante a sessão vocal de apoio para adicionar alguns gritos e grunhidos às músicas. Também "64 Women" será o primeiro EP gravado pela atual formação, Coralie gravou a bateria no estúdio de Thomas Lang em Thousand Oaks. Nós tivemos uma explosão! Joey e eu gravamos o baixo e guitarras em Hollywood no estúdio de Jason.

Jason acrescentou algumas guitarras muito legais e eu tenho que gravar com suas guitarras vintage que ele usa para os shows de Alanis! Nós nos divertimos muito e estamos muito felizes com o resultado, não podemos esperar para compartilhar com todos vocês.

JS: Sim muito animado !!! Esta é a minha primeira gravação do EP com o Tarah Who?
Ouvir as mixagens nas últimas semanas tem sido extremamente inspirador e motivador, sabendo que nosso trabalho árduo está sendo capturado com tanta qualidade !!! Obrigado ao co-produtor Jason Orme!

7 - Como tem sido a rotina de shows?
O público tem apoiado bastante?
R: JS: Nós tocamos localmente o máximo que pudemos, espalhando-nos o máximo que podemos pelo sul da Califórnia, quando não estamos na estrada na van costa a costa! O apoio tem sido exponencial e estamos gratos pelo amor!

CH: Estamos sempre tocando em shows na Califórnia. É estranho quando não tocamos !!! (risos)

Onde quer que você esteja tocando, você sempre conhece novas pessoas e elas gostam da sua música !! É muito louco e ao mesmo tempo você é feliz porque as pessoas sentem o mesmo que você sobre sua música, é tudo que importa.

TGC: Bem, estamos baseados na Califórnia, então tocamos principalmente em Socal. Nosso tour pela costa oeste (San Diego até Seattle) foi a primeira turnê juntos. Foi muito divertido porque fizemos uma turnê com nosso amigo da França, DRY CAN.

Nossa turnê na Costa Leste foi muito diferente, voamos para Nova York com tanto equipamento quanto pudemos e depois alugamos um carro para viajar pela costa leste. Foi muito interessante sair e conhecer uma multidão completamente diferente de pessoas.

O público é muito favorável. Isso é basicamente o que nos faz continuar. Quando promotores, locais e pessoas da platéia são empolgantes em falar com você e tê-lo de volta, você sabe que está fazendo algo certo.

Somos músicos, mas também somos artistas.
Nós amamos fazer o nosso trabalho, nós amamos receber o seu amor e devolvê-lo. É motivador e inspirador.

8 - Pretendem um dia tocar por aqui (Brasil) ou América do Sul?
Acredito que a sonoridade de vocês seria bem vinda em festivais como o Lollapalooza que ocorre em minha cidade (São Paulo)...
R: CH: Isso seria tão insano !! É realmente algo que queremos fazer, você sabe, indo á todos os lugares onde as pessoas ouçam nossa música e dão um show incrível, agradecendo-lhes pelo apoio.

TGC: Puxa, eu adoraria tocar no Lollapalooza !! Tocando em qualquer lugar do mundo definitivamente, mas eu também concordo com você que a América do Sul seria um ótimo destino para nós.
Definitivamente na nossa lista de lugares para ir em breve (sorrisos)

Engraçado, fizemos um show ao vivo em nosso Instagram ontem (@tarahwho) e alguém do Brasil se juntou ao show ao vivo.
Ela parecia gostar disso (sorrisos)
Eu também sei de fato que os fãs brasileiros são os melhores fãs.

JS: Sim! Eu vi os vídeos de todos os meus ídolos como o Rush tocarem para centenas de milhares! Além de multidões impressionantes, seria verdadeiramente nosso privilégio e uma honra!

9 - Acreditam que a mídia física tem seu lugar ainda ou o Streaming vai garantir este espaço?
R: CH: Eu pessoalmente adoro ter o CD físico ou vinil das minhas bandas favoritas. Em nossos dias, é mais difícil apresentar uma mídia física, especialmente quando você é uma banda independente e as pessoas preferem fazer tudo on-line, pois é mais fácil e custa menos.

JS: Eu concordo com Coralie completamente!
E para ser honesto, na estrada a maioria das pessoas pedem um CD e as poucas vezes que acabamos as pessoas pareciam genuinamente decepcionadas.
Parece inédito, mas eu testemunho! Streaming é definitivamente dominante, mas ambos coexistirão no futuro.

TGC: Eu também sou old school. Eu gosto de segurar o CD e lê-lo. Eu gosto de ler os agradecimentos e quem fez o que. Eu sou geek quando se trata disso.

Eu gosto de streaming também porque eu tenho a música no meu celular. Eu continuo usando os dois.

Eu realmente não me importo de comprar a música de alguém duas vezes, se eu realmente gostar dela, e eu quero apoiá-la, tê-la no meu smartphone em movimento e/ou poder segurá-la e tocá-la no meu carro ou em casa.

10 - Para finalizar, querem deixar algum recado?
R: CH: Obrigado pela entrevista e, Rock On !!!!

In recent weeks I have had some interesting contacts coming from abroad, more precisely from the UK in this case, and with that, I had the great opportunity to have a chat with a company called "Stencil PR" that serves many bands.

I was then sent to me some groups that we will divulge from time to time, with interviews to spread ...

The group addressed in this first interview is the trio called "Tarah Who?" ...

1 - How did they start the band?

TGC: I started music when I was 14 years old, I was playing drums and bass in different bands. I started writing my own songs a little bit later, but I never shared anything. I had a couple friends who had really nice voices so I shared with them what I wrote but even though they had pretty voices, It was not the interpretation I was looking for.

I decided that I would sing just because no one else could tell my story, but me. A few years later I moved to Los Angeles. I was looking for bands to play the drums and bass in then I thought that in the meantime.. I would try to play my songs out. People responded really nicely to my music so I thought that I would make a demo and posted in on myspace!

A few producers and musicians hit me up, wanting to help me out making a good sounding product, and that is pretty much how it all started. I learned a lot over the years, learned about myself and the sound I wanted. I got more and more confident knowing what I wanted to sound like and being more comfortable being a leader of a band.

I met Coralie and I loved her playing and professional attitude, we got along right away, and a little bit later, our bass player had to quit the band. I met Joey 2 weeks before going on tour and Joey is the best "thing" that has ever happened in the world of Tarah Who? 

I am very thankful to have both of these people in the band, that started 1' years ago but matured with these two individuals. 

JS : Tarah G. Carpenter contacted me via Facebook messenger..."Hi Joey, I am contacting you because I am looking for a bass player for my band Tarah Who? If you like what you hear hit me back. Have a good day! " Tarah...

Random message seemed strange and it went unanswered for six days. The idea rolled around in my head enough and I decided to give it a listen. Two weeks later we left for a west coast tour!

2 - We know that every trio must have a lot of interaction, and, you have enough ...

Did this happen naturally?

CH : Actually yes !! We really found each other I think. We have fun playing together and I know that they have my back in case I miss something in the song for example. It’s really important, for me, to have this connection with the people that you work with. It makes everything more easier and better. 

JS : Yes! Coralie Herve! We have your back 100%!!!
It has been an amazing summer and we all spent a lot of time together in tight spaces from cars, trains, planes, rehearsal rooms, humble stages and wherever we could rest our head for the night. Learning a lot about eachother but also learning a lot from eachother has been inspiring. 

TGC: Yes I agree with Coralie and Joey, It was all very natural. We met Joey and we took him on tour. We were laughing the other day realizing that we were lucky that Joey was not a crazy person!

I mean we didn't know him and we took him on the road to sleep in the same room as us, and go miles and miles away! Another thing that has happened naturally is that we have a really good chemistry and we got to know each other really quickly and intensively. We have gone through a lot of stress and emotions during those two weeks but like Coralie mentioned, we knew we had each others back.
On and Off stage, we still do on an everyday basis.

The three of us are pretty mature and professional when it comes to the band, we know we want to go further and grow. Having the same goals with this band helps out make better decisions for the three of us. We have such a good energy together that even during rehearsals we are sweating and jamming because we have so much fun playing together.
The stage performance is the same with the energy of the crowd on top of that, we're in heaven! 

3 - I liked the accessible sound they make ... what would be their biggest influences?

JS : My influence comes from my journey of trying to understand my place in the mix. Bassists like Ray Brown or Lemmy Kilmister, who I assume never played a note they didn't have to, inspire me to play with purpose. In Tarah Who?, we tend to mix multiple genres into songs that keep you on your toes!!!

CH : I’m a really big fan of Nightwish, a symphonic metal band, and a lot of rock, metal band from Evanescence to Battle Beast, Amaranthe, Arch Enemy… 

I think for Tarah Who? it’s a mix of rock, punk, grunge, alternative but at the same time is unique.

We all, Tarah, Joey and I, bring our own style and influences to Tarah Who?’s music.

TGC: I grew up listening to Alanis Morissette and I know that my songwriting has been influenced for its raw autobiographical lyrics. Then I discovered, The Distillers, The foo fighters, pantera, Motörhead, Rage Against the Machine etc... So I think all of bands from the 90s in this genre influenced my taste in sounds.

We do not try to sound like anyone, we jsut play our music and how we feel, but I am sure my ears have been affected:)

4 - Listening to your musics, I realized the natural evolution that occurred (I think you feel that too)...

Is it easier to compose nowadays?

TGC: First of all, thank you for taking the time to listen :) and yes, you are correct.

My first album, I was really young and shy.  I did not dare to say what I liked or disliked. I was surrounded by "know-it-all's" and that was my mistake for not speaking up. I have learned a lot through the process and I have no regrets. It build who I am today.

I know better and would not trade this experience for anything. A lot of life events also happened to me and I have matured in my stories. My first album is definitely more about coming out and feeling as comfortable as I can about it. "Little Out There" has a lot of betrayal from friends in it. People that have really hurt me in different ways, using me mainly for different types of self satisfaction.

The music evolves with the emotions, hence the anger, and change in sounds. I was also growing, and my ears and taste were changing, I think that we have more of a TARAH WHO? sound and identity now than ever. 

I am really glad that you have noticed this evolution. 

I purposefully left those albums up for that reason, I want people to hear that evolution and I want musicians to know that is OK and normal to grow.
You can't release your first album perfectly.

I think that it makes things more interesting to notice a change and try to identify it. You can't expect bands to always sound the same,not when it is authentic, and artistic. 

5 - What is your biggest wish today?

CH : To be able to go everywhere in the world and play our music to everybody who wants to listen !!

TGC: Yes, pretty much the same, I want to do it all, I would LOVE to have a recording and rehearsing studio. Write songs, record them, play them around the world in front of a loving moshing crowd! 

JS : Yes Coralie!!! Basically live the dream to pursue our music and not live within any red tape! We will do this ourselves until we do it right!!!

6 - Do you want to release some material soon or maybe in 2019?

CH : We have a new EP ‘’64 Women’’ coming soon and some videos too. I’m really excited about this, I hope you guys will like it too !!! 

TGC: Jason Orme (Alanis Morissette) is co-producing our new EP called "64 Women". Jason co produced last year "Half Middle Child Syndrome" and we had such a good time that we decided to do it again this year.

Jason is currently mixing the last song of the EP and then I will send it to be mastered. The album cover is being made right now by Amber Ledet. She is a very talented painter based in Los Angeles (check out her art @amberluna and www.artbyamberledet.com).

We are very excited for this new EP. Matt Houdini from Lujuria joined us during the backing vocal session to add some screams and growls to the songs. Also "64 Women" will be the first EP recorded by the current line-up, Coralie recorded the drums at Thomas Lang's studio in Thousand Oaks.

We had a BLAST! Joey and I recorded the bass and guitars in Hollywood at Jason's studio. Jason added some very cool lead guitars and I got to record with his vintage guitars that he uses for Alanis' shows!! We had a great time and we are really happy with the result, we cannot wait to share it with you all:) 

JS : Yes very excited!!! This is my first EP recording with Tarah Who? Listening back to the mixes over the past weeks has been extremely inspiring and motivating knowing that our hard work is being captured in such quality!!! Thanks to co-producer Jason Orme! 

7 - How has been the routine of shows?

Has the public been supportive enough?

JS : We play out locally as much as we can as far spread out as we can across Southern California when we are not out on the road in the van coast to coast! The support has been exponential and we are grateful for the love!

CH : We are always playing shows in California. It’s actually weird when we don’t play !!! haha

Everywhere you’re playing, you always meet new people and they like your music !! It’s really crazy and at the same time you’re happy because people feel the same as you about your music, it’s all that matters.

TGC: Well we are based in California so we play mostly in Socal. Our west coast tour (San Diego to Seattle) was the first tour together. It was a lot of fun because we toured with our friend from France, DRY CAN.

Our East Coast tour was very different, we flew to NYC with as much gear as we could and then rented a car to travel around the east coast. It was very interesting to get out and meet a completely different crowd of people. 

The audience is VERY supportive. This pretty much what keeps us going. When promoters, venues, and people from the audience are exciting to come talk to you and have you back, you know you 're doing something right:) We are musicians, but we are also entertainers. WE love doing our job, we love receiving your love and giving it back. It is motivating and inspiring. 

8 - Do you want to play here one day (Brazil) or South America?

I believe that the sound of you would be welcome in festivals like the Lollapalooza that occurs in my city (São Paulo) …

CH : That would be so insane !! It’s really something that we want to do, you know, going everywhere where people listen to our music and give them an amazing show, thanks them for their support.

TGC: Gosh, I would LOVE to play Lollapalooza!! Playing anywhere in the world definitely but I also agree with you that South America would be a great destination for us. Definitely on our list of places to go to soon :)

Funny enough, we did a live show on our Instagram yesterday (@tarahwho) and someone from Brazil joined the live show. She seemed to enjoy it:) I also know for a fact the Brazilian fans are the best fans ;)

JS : Yes! I have seen the videos of all my idols like Rush play to hundreds of thousands! Beyond impressive crowds and it would truly be our privilege and an honor!

9 - Do you believe that the physical media has its place yet or the Streaming will guarantee this space?

CH : I personally love to have the physical CD or vinyl of my favorite bands. In our days, it’s more difficult to present a physical media, specially when you’re a independent band likes us, and people prefer to do everything online, it’s more easier and cost less. 

JS : I agree with Coralie completely! And to be honest on the road most people ask for a CD and the few times we ran out people seemed genuinely disappointed. Seems unheard of but I testify! Streaming is most definitely dominant but both will coexist in the future.

TGC: Me too, I 'm old school. I like to hold the CD, and read through it. I like to read the thank you's and who has done what. I am geek when it comes to this. I do enjoy streaming too because I have the music on my phone. I just keep using both. I really don't mind buying someone's music twice if I really like them and I want to support them, to have it on my phone on the go and/or be able to hold it and play it in my car or at home.

10 - Finally, do you want to leave a message?

CH : Thank you for the interview and Rock On !!!!

JS : Can not wait to one day have an I person interview when we visit and rock out with the people of Brazil!
