1 - Como você começou a banda?
Hybrid Spirits foi formada em 2017 após Paul Kirk conhecer Voodoo Jade através de um projeto colaborativo.
Antes disso, Paul e Nigel estiveram em uma banda por muitos anos chamada “Aus der Asche” que ficou conhecida como “From the Ashes UK”.
Voodoo Jade está envolvido com outras bandas desde o final dos anos 1980. Depois do projeto colaborativo, Paul e Nigel convidaram Voodoo Jade para se juntar a eles em sua aventura musical, e Hybrid Spirits nasceu!

2 - Pode o momento atual ser considerado o melhor da banda?
É difícil responder porque escrevemos tantos tipos diferentes de música! Com cada música que escrevemos e lançamos, ficamos mais fortes como banda.
Agora sabemos como cada um funciona e o que cada pessoa trará para a música. À medida que escrevemos diferentes gêneros musicais (do alternativo ao ambiente, do rock e industrial ao eletrônico), os fãs com certeza preferirão um estilo de música a outro.
Nossa música “Fear” foi amada por muitos gêneros, pois a música cruzou muitos limites.
Nosso último EP, “Mirage”, é uma mistura de música clara e dark, do rock / metal ao eletrônico, e mais uma vez exploramos áreas que não exploramos antes.
Nossa escrita certamente se tornou mais intensa, em camadas, dramática e aventureira do que era no início!
3 - O que você diria sobre a sonoridade?onde mais você se encaixa nas influências adquiridas?
A sonoridade é importante porque dá um som e uma sensação distintos à música. Embora nossas músicas possam variar, é fácil reconhecer a voz de Nigel ou Voodoo Jade - quem quer que esteja fazendo a voz principal em qualquer música em particular ... mas os sons criados por Paul nas guitarras e Nigel com sintetizadores ainda são seu estilo distinto de trabalho.
Voodoo Jade funciona sobrepondo várias harmonias de uma vez, e não acreditamos que todas as bandas façam isso. A experiência dela com corais adiciona intensidade a algumas de nossas canções, como por exemplo a canção “Mirage”.
No momento em que chega ao meio 8, há pelo menos 12 faixas vocais! Claro, nossa música está relacionada aos nossos gostos musicais individuais e outras bandas que nos inspiram, bem como bandas maravilhosas que vimos tocar ao vivo.
Todos nós temos diferentes influências e gostos musicais. Paul gosta de tudo, desde heavy metal até música clássica, incluindo Rammstein, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Cult, Neil Young. Nigel adora música eletrônica, mas também Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Gary Numan.
Ele também adora música ska, gótica, rock, new wave, synthwave. Ele se relaciona particularmente com músicas com fortes conexões emocionais.
Voodoo Jade adora a maior parte da música que Paul e Nigel gostam, com um pouco de folk e música new age em boa medida!
Enquanto crescia, ela era uma grande fã de Blondie, e agora ela ama Evanescence, Indigo Girls e Enigma.
Música pesada e sombria parece nos atrair e nós gostamos de criá-la!
4 - Falando em processo de criação, quanto pensamento existe antes de criar um novo material?Existe um plano ou você deixa as idéias fluírem naturalmente?
Em geral, vamos começar a fazer música seguindo o fluxo natural e vendo aonde a música nos leva.
Às vezes, a música vem antes da letra, e outras vezes a letra é escrita antes da música. No entanto, nosso álbum ambiente de débito "Astral Whispers" foi baseado nas gravações da NASA de ondas sonoras de planetas em nosso sistema solar. Portanto, a música e as letras foram planejadas para se enquadrar no tema geral.
Visto que nossa música “Fear” era tão popular, estamos ansiosos para explorar mais músicas nesse estilo, então certamente estaremos planejando como recriar essas músicas sombrias e vibrantes!
A banda também está criando música instrumental para algumas faixas de meditação que Voodoo Jade está escrevendo atualmente, então é claro que a música precisa ser calmante e relevante nesta ocasião.
Tudo varia quanto ao projeto!
5 - Você já pensou em tocar aqui na América do Sul?o público no Brasil é muito apaixonado por música!
Infelizmente, Hybrid Spirits, como uma banda, não fez turnê ou tocou ao vivo, embora nunca excluiríamos isso se nos pedissem. No passado, todos nós já tocamos ao vivo em vários locais no Reino Unido e no exterior como parte de outras bandas.
A América do Sul é uma linda parte do mundo com pessoas adoráveis, e somos abençoados por ter alguns contatos no Brasil. A capa do nosso álbum “Astral Whispers” foi criada pelo talentosíssimo Caio Caldas (Cadies Art), radicado em São Paulo. Seria maravilhoso tocar na América do Sul no futuro!
Quanto a nós, estamos espalhados por todo o país e é difícil para Voodoo Jade viajar, pois ela está em uma cadeira de rodas devido à meningite em 2012.
Trabalhamos em nossas músicas eletronicamente e remotamente.
Cada música é passada a cada um e aos membros para adicionar o que desejam, antes que uma música seja concluída. Lockdown foi uma experiência positiva para a composição musical para nós, pois tínhamos mais tempo livre para trabalhar na música individualmente.
Não nos encontramos pessoalmente com muita frequência, mas temos reuniões regulares da banda no chat de vídeo.
E por falar em lockdowns, vimos que o Brasil foi gravemente afetado pela Covid-19, então mandamos nossos pensamentos, orações e votos de felicidades a todos os afetados pela pandemia.
6 - Sabemos que o mercado musical não é mais o mesmo... o que é preciso para se manter atualizado e relevante?
Hoje em dia, uma grande presença online e nas redes sociais parece ajudar muito, assim como no rádio.
Já se foram os dias antes da Internet, quando você ouvia sobre música diversa em revistas locais e nacionais de música! No entanto, algumas coisas ainda são importantes, como uma boa música, uma identidade e um som distinto.
7 - Você gosta da ideia de lançar vídeos em formato lírico?
A ideia é boa porque ajuda as pessoas a conhecer e entender as letras, principalmente para falantes de outras línguas estrangeiras! Embora os vídeos com letras possam tirar a concentração da música em si, eles não são uma alternativa ruim para pessoas como nós, que não podem pagar por vídeos profissionais feitos!

Acabamos de lançar um EP de 4 faixas chamado “Mirage” que tem 2 músicas no estilo rock e metal (“Mirage” é sobre um vampiro e “Mysteria-Hysteria” é baseado em filmes de terror). Todos os fãs de rock / metal deveriam definitivamente dar uma olhada nessas duas músicas, assim como nossa música “Fear” do “Fear EP”.
Recebemos muitos comentários excelentes dos fãs de metal para essas músicas.
As outras duas músicas do EP Mirage são mais de um estilo eletrônico com guitarras, incluindo as músicas “La Vie en Rose et Noire” e a música “Rain or Shine”.
Lançamos “Rain or Shine” como um single de caridade no verão de 2020 e ainda estamos arrecadando fundos até o final de abril de 2021. É uma música que escrevemos durante o bloqueio na Inglaterra para refletir sentimentos de esperança e solidariedade durante o Covid-19 pandemia, e as vendas dela estão levantando dinheiro para o Comitê Internacional da Cruz Vermelha para as pessoas afetadas pela Covid-19 em todo o mundo.

1 - How did you start the band?
Hybrid Spirits formed in 2017 after Paul Kirk met Voodoo Jade via a collaborative project. Before that, Paul and Nigel were in a band for many years called “Aus der Asche” which became known as “From the Ashes UK”.
Voodoo Jade has been involved in other bands since the late 1980s. After the collaborative project, Paul and Nigel invited Voodoo Jade to join them in their music venture, and Hybrid Spirits were born!
Hybrid Spirits are :
Nigel Rooke – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards and drum programming.
Paul Kirk – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards, guitars and drum programming.
Voodoo Jade – Vocals and lyrics
2 - Can the current moment be considered the best of the band?
It is difficult to answer because we write so many different types of music! With each song we write and release we get stronger as a band. We now know how each other works, and what each person will bring to the music.
As we write different genres of music (from alternative to ambient, from rock and industrial to electronic), fans will of course prefer one style of song to another. Our song “Fear” was loved by many genres as the music crossed over many boundaries.
Our latest EP “Mirage” is a mix of light and dark music, from rock/metal to electronic, and once again we have explored areas which we haven’t before.
Our writing has certainly become more intense, layered, dramatic and adventurous than it was at the beginning!
3 - What would you say about sonority? Where else do you fit into the acquired influences?
Sonority is important because it gives a distinctive sound and feel to the music.
Although our songs can vary, it is easy to recognise Nigel or Voodoo Jade’s voice – whoever is taking lead vocals on any particular song…..but the sounds created by Paul on guitars and Nigel with synths is still their distinctive style of working.
Voodoo Jade works by layering several harmonies at a time, and we don’t believe that all bands do this.
Her experience of choirs does add intensity to some of our songs, take the song “Mirage” for example. By the time it gets to the middle 8, there are 12 vocal tracks at least!
Of course, our music is related to our own individual music tastes and other bands which inspire us, as well as wonderful bands who we’ve seen play live.
We all have different music tastes and influences. Paul likes anything from heavy metal to classical music, including Rammstein, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Cult, Neil Young.
Nigel loves electronic music, but also Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Gary Numan. He also loves Ska music, Goth, Rock, new wave, synthwave. He particularly relates to songs with strong emotional connections.
Voodoo Jade loves most of the music which Paul and Nigel like, with some folk and new age music thrown in for good measure! Growing up, she was a big fan of Blondie, and now she loves Evanescence, Indigo Girls and Enigma.
Heavier and darker music seems to draw us in and we enjoy creating it!
4 - Speaking of creation process, how much thought is there before creating new material? Is there a plan or do you let ideas flow naturally?
In general, we will start making music by following the natural flow, and seeing where the music takes us. Sometimes, music comes before the lyrics, and other times the lyrics are written before the music.
However, our debit ambient album “Astral Whispers” was based on NASA’s recordings of sound waves from planets in our solar system.
Therefore, the music and lyrics were planned to fit in with the general theme.
Given that our song “Fear” was so popular, we are keen to explore more songs in this style, so we will certainly be planning how to recreate such dark and vibrant songs!
The band is also creating some instrumental music for some meditation tracks which Voodoo Jade is currently writing, so of course the music needs to be calming and relevant on this occasion. It all varies as to the project!
5 - Have you ever thought of playing here in South America? Audiences in Brazil are very passionate about music!
Unfortunately, Hybrid Spirits as a band haven’t toured or played live, although we’d never rule it out if we were asked to. In the past, we have all performed live at various venues in the UK and abroad as part of other bands.
South America is a beautiful part of the world with lovely people, and we are blessed to have a few contacts in Brazil.
The cover art for our “Astral Whispers” album was created by the very talented Caio Caldas (Cadies Art), based in Sao Paulo. It would be wonderful to play in South America in the future!
As for us, we are spread across the country and it is difficult for Voodoo Jade to travel as she is in a wheelchair following Meningitis in 2012.
We work on our songs electronically and remotely. Each song is passed to each and member to add what they wish, before a song is completed. Lockdown was a positive experience for music writing for us, as we had more free time to work on music individually.
We don’t meet up in person very often, but we have regular band meetings on video chat.
And speaking of lockdowns, we saw that Brazil has been badly affected by Covid-19, so we send our thoughts, prayers and best wishes to everyone affected by the pandemic.
6 - We know that the music market is no longer the same ... what does it take to stay fresh and relevant?
These days, a big online and social media presence seem to help a lot, as well as radio play. Long gone are the days before the internet when you’d hear about diverse music through local & national music magazines!
Some things are still as important though, such as great sounding music, an identity and a distinctive sound.
7 - Do you like the idea of releasing videos in lyric format?
The idea is good because it helps people to know and understand the lyrics, especially for speakers of other foreign languages!
Although lyric videos can take the concentration away from the music itself, they’re not a bad alternative for people like us who can’t afford to have professional videos made!

We have just released a 4 track EP called “Mirage” which has 2 songs in the style of rock and metal (“Mirage” is about a vampire and “Mysteria-Hysteria” is based on horror films).
All rock/metal fans should definitely check out these two songs, as well as our song “Fear” from the “Fear EP”.
We have had a lot of great feedback from metal fans for these songs.
The other two songs on the Mirage EP are more of an electronic style with guitars, including the songs “La Vie en Rose et Noire” and the song “Rain or Shine”.
We released “Rain or Shine” as a charity single in the summer of 2020 and are still fundraising until the end of April 2021. It is a song which we wrote during lockdown in England to reflect feelings of hope and solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and sales from it are raising money for the International Committee of the Red Cross for those affected by Covid-19 across the world.

Also, we have already started recording some new songs which will be on a future release. Again, it is a different feel to the music which we’ve already released, and would be classed as darkwave/electronic.
We are still writing more music for the next EP/album so everything could change yet! We do alternate vocals between Nigel and Voodoo Jade, and the next EP will predominately be Nigel on main vocals. His voice is perfect for darker songs!
