Desta vez falamos com a banda River Of Souls.

1 - Como você começou a banda?
Paul: bom, River Of Souls começou como um projeto de gravação comigo, o baixista Benjamin e o vocalista Bart. Não era nosso objetivo começar uma banda de verdade, mas em algum momento pensamos que fazer shows seria legal, então, começamos a procurar por membros da banda para completar a formação, e agora somos uma banda 'real' em vez de uma studioprojectband.
2 - O momento atual pode ser considerado o melhor da banda?
Paul: hmmm sim e não. Claro, recentemente fizemos um álbum com o melhor de nossa capacidade, mas depois de lançar um álbum, você finalmente tem a chance de sair e tocar muito. Mas essa chance foi completamente desperdiçada pela Covid19, é claro.
Uma vez que os shows e shows podem ser feitos de maneira normal novamente, nosso álbum mais recente já estará velho, então, temos que passar por todo o processo de composição, gravação e produção novamente, para ter um produto novo para promover ao vivo novamente.
Acho isso um tanto desanimador para ser honesto.
Terei que me recarregar com energia e inspiração antes de passar por todo o processo novamente. Mas uma coisa positiva é que nossos mais novos membros da banda Koen e Mathijs, estão atualmente no processo de composição de um EP.
Acho que essa pode ser a melhor coisa que pode acontecer com River Of Souls.
Todos os trabalhos anteriores foram compostos, mixados e produzidos por mim, e Bart escreveu todas as letras e vocais. De agora em diante as coisas vão mudar, isso provavelmente trará um novo som para a banda.
Outra mudança será que Mathijs criará um novo som de guitarra para River Of Souls. Ele não gosta do som de guitarra que eu prefiro, mas acho que um novo som de guitarra pode ser bom, então, vou apenas seguir seu exemplo e ver onde isso dá.
3 - O que você diria sobre sonoridade?onde mais você se encaixa nas influências adquiridas?
Paul: Eu tendo a incorporar todos os tipos de influências à nossa música. Nosso som é uma mistura de Doom, Death e Metal em sua essência, mas regularmente adiciono ideias que recebo do rock progressivo dos anos 70, blackmetal, numetal, mathcore, heavy metal, hardrock, música pop, cantor / compositor ou o que quer que eu acho que é uma boa ideia incorporar.
No entanto, isso tem seus prós e contras. Isso torna nossa música bastante diversa e aventureira, mas a maioria dos ouvintes não gosta desse tipo de bebida e prefere algo que seja direto doommetal, ou direto deathmetal, ou qualquer estilo que prefira ouvir naquele momento.
4 - Falando em processo de criação, quanto pensamento existe antes de criar um novo material. Existe um plano ou você deixa as ideias fluírem naturalmente?
Paul: Todos nós temos uma abordagem diferente quando se trata de escrever. Eu também não tenho uma 'regra prática'. Normalmente eu recolho ideias e riffs, até que algumas peças se encaixem, e então começo a trabalhar em uma faixa a partir daí. Mas outras vezes eu apenas crio uma base sólida e consigo combinar coisas de uma só vez. Algumas faixas são escritas em menos de uma hora, outras levam meses antes de eu ficar satisfeito.
5 - Você já pensou em tocar aqui na América do Sul?
O público no Brasil é muito apaixonado por música!
Paul: Ha! Sim, claro, mas isso é uma coisa muito cara, não podemos nos permitir tal coisa. Mas quem sabe, talvez possamos fazer isso um dia…. No entanto, seria ótimo, estamos recebendo muitas execuções no Spotify do Brasil e do Chile!
6 - Sabemos que o mercado musical não é mais o mesmo ... o que é preciso para se manter atualizado e relevante?Paul: Boa pergunta .... Diga-me o que é quando tiver a resposta!
7 - Você gosta da ideia de lançar vídeos em formato lírico?
Paul: Com certeza! Na verdade, esperamos lançar um novo vídeo-letra em uma ou duas semanas, da música 'A Spirit's Weight'. Estamos esperando que a produtora termine. Dependendo do resultado, podemos fazer outro do álbum do Usurper também. Essa não foi a ideia inicial: planejamos gravar o lançamento do show e lançar algumas faixas desse programa no youtube, mas bem…. Esse show foi cancelado por causa de Covid, é claro…. Então, você teria que criar outra coisa para ganhar alguma atenção, e os vídeos e líricos são muito adequados para fazer isso.
Também pretendemos gravar uma sessão ao vivo em nossa sala de ensaio em breve, mas tecnicamente ainda não está pronto.

1 - How did you start the band?
Paul: well, River Of Souls started as a recordingproject with me, bassist Benjamin and vocalist Bart. It wasn't our goal to start a real band, but at some point we thought playing gigs would be cool, so, we started looking for bandmembers to complete the line up, and we're now a 'real' band instead of a studioprojectband.
2 - Can the current moment be considered the best of the band?
Paul: hmmm, yes, and no. Of course, we recently made an album to the best of our ability, but after you release an album, you finally have the chance to go out and play a lot. But that chance got completely wasted by Covid19 of course. Once concerts and gigs can be done in a normal manner again, our most recent album will already be old, so, we have to go through the whole process of writing, recording and production again, to have a fresh product for promoting live again.
I find this rather discouraging to be honest. I'll have to charge myself up with energy and inspiration before I can go through the whole process again.
But a positive thing is that our newest bandmembers Koen and Mathijs, are currently in the writing process for an EP.
I think this might be the best thing that can happen to River Of Souls.
All previous works were composed, mixed, and produced by me, and Bart wrote all the lyrics and vocallines. From now on things will change, this will probably bring a fresh new sound for the band. Another change will be that Mathijs will create a new guitarsound for River Of Souls.
He doesn't like the guitarsound that I prefer, but I think a fresh new guitarsound might be good, so, I'll just follow his lead and see where it goes.
3 - What would you say about sonority? Where else do you fit into the acquired influences?
Paul : I tend to incorporate all kinds of influences to our music. Our sound is a mixture of Doom, Death, and Metal in its core, but I regularly add ideas that I get from 70's progressive rock, blackmetal, numetal, mathcore, heavy metal, hardrock, popmusic, singer/songwriter stuff, or whatever I think is a good idea to incorporate.
That has its pros and cons though. It makes our music quite diverse and adventurous, but, most listeners are not into such brews, and prefer something that's straightforward doommetal, or straightforward deathmetal, or straightforward whatever style they prefer to hear at that moment.
4 - Speaking of creation process, how much thought is there before creating new material? Is there a plan or do you let ideas flow naturally?
Paul : We all have a different approach when it comes to writing. I don't have a 'rule of thumb' way either. Usually I gather up ideas and riffs, until some pieces fit together, and then I start working on a track from there. But other times I just come up with a solid mainriff and come up with matching things in a single go.
Some tracks are written in less than an hour, others take months before I'm satisfied.
5 - Have you ever thought of playing here in South America? Audiences in Brazil are very passionate about music!
Paul : Ha! Yeah sure, but this is a very costly thing, we cannot afford ourselves such a thing. But who knows, maybe we're able to do that one day…. It would be great though, we're getting a lot of plays on Spotify from Brazil and Chile!
6 - We know that the music market is no longer the same ... what does it take to stay fresh and relevant?
Paul : Good question…. Please let me know what it is when you've got the answer!
7 - Do you like the idea of releasing videos in lyric format?
Paul : Certainly! As a matter of fact, we expect to release a new lyricvideo in a week or 2, of the song 'A Spirit's Weight'. We're waiting for the productioncompany to finish it up. Depending on the result, we might do another one off the recent Usurper album as well. This wasn't the initial idea though : We planned to record the releaseshow, and release a couple of tracks from that show on youtube, but well….
That show was cancelled because of Covid of course….
So, then you'd have to create something else to gain some attention, and video's and lyricvideo's are very suitable for doing that. We also aim to record a live session in our rehearsalroom soon, but technically it's not ready yet.
