Rock Vibrations Entrevista : Ravenscry

(English Version Below)

A música é nossa paixão e nosso trabalho.

Aqui estão elas: Billie Eilish, The Weekend, Dua Lipa, Drake, Daft Punk, Flume, Vulfpek, Ludovico Einaudi, The Cinematic Orchestra, Black Pumas, Andy Timmons, etc.

English Below :

In the midst of the pandemic that we are experiencing in the last few months, we have seen countless changes in various sectors, whether here in Brazil or around the world, everyone is taking the proper care so that they are safe and in full health.

One of the coolest bands I was able to meet in Italy is Ravenscry, including, a few months ago we talked to them about their career (at the time they had no plans to release a new album quickly), so; why not talk to the musicians again to find out how?

Recently they released their newest album, "100" and several questions came to me ... So, check out our conversation below:

1 - Before we start, I want to know how things are in the middle of the pandemic ... Italy was one of the first countries to go through huge problems and countless deaths, unfortunately ... the band has gone through many changes in the last few months?  Thanks for the question. We decided not to be stopped by the situation and to release our new album “100” anyway, because we believe music can help and motivate people, and nothing can change that. Music is our passion and our job.

We love making music, and everything done with the heart is a gift. So, why stop this?

2 - Since the last time we spoke, several things have happened and you have released the great album "100". What are the main points of change if we compare this current record with the previous one?
First of all, we have a new band member, Federico Schiavoni at the guitar, who joined the band in 2018 as a substitute for Paul in the live activity. He gave us a big contribution to the songwriting, because he has a different musical background from our, with a lot of “fresh” ideas. Anyway, Paul is still in the band as a composer, so we didn’t lose our main sound.

Speaking of the record, “The Invisible” was a concept album, so the entire process of composition was quite different: we were focused on telling a story and express in music the feelings of the characters within it. In ‘100’ we took a more “straight – forward” direction, trying to compose very melodic songs without losing our grit and our “heavy” soul.

At the same time, we wrote lyrics about social and psychological matters excerpt from our everyday life.

3 - In "100" I noticed that many songs sound radio and accessible, almost in a Pop tone.
Was there an idea to change the direction or did it all happen naturally?

Some songs are too much and are easily sung.  It all happened naturally, we didn’t decide it before.
When we started listening to each one’s ideas and working on the songs we realized that we all got spontaneously in this direction. So we just followed this path and we liked the way every song connected to the sound of the next one.

That’s how the entire album was born as a whole work, but on the other hand, every song can be appreciated separately.

4 - Tell us about the album art ... does it have many connections with the songs or is there a concept of its own? Taking advantage of the subject, in our last conversation, it was said that in "The Invisible" they had to study hard for the songs to be made in the way we know ... and currently? what are the main ideas that are included in these songs? even, they reduced the length and number of tracks, and I sincerely see that they got it right ... "Binary", "The Door Inside" and mainly "Destination: Nowhere" are my favorites
We chose to work with Mario Sanchez again because he did such an amazing job for “The Invisible” that we expected nothing less for this one. We are very happy with the result. Like the previous time, we gave Mario full freedom and trust to get his personal inspiration from the music in order to create the artwork.

We were sure that Mario is able to understand the music and catch the messages in it. He actually did it. The main ideas behind our songs are all about the inner struggles of the human being. Mario captured all the feelings of contrast that we tried to explain with music and lyrics. Anyway, we are glad you like those songs, thank you!

5 - Fans can expect a lot of visual yet amid the disclosures of the new album - nowadays lyric videos, for example, have won the phonographic market.
Yes, nowadays you can do pretty much everything in terms of visual material, and this is a great thing for artists. We think lyric videos are a good way to convey the message of a song, and we did four of them for the singles of "100".

We received good feedbacks about these songs and it seemed to us that music, words, and graphics can work very well together: they help listeners to understand and feel the song in a closer way to the band idea about it.

6 - Without a doubt, sales have become complicated in some sectors today; but I have noticed a great demand for specific materials, and music has been gaining more and more space in various houses around the world.
Are you adapting well to disseminate the material? Are you receiving the support expected after the release of "100"?

We are very happy with the support we are receiving for “100”. We didn’t expect anything specific, we just tried to do our best as always, and we are glad that people like what we do and how we do it.

Of course, we are trying to follow people’s needs and to let everything about Ravenscry available in all the places and platforms we can.

7 - One of the coolest things about this new album is the vocal approach ...it is smooth and captivating. Quoting "Destination: Nowhere" again, it became my favorite track and coincidentally, one of my editors (Anne Angels, who is also a vocalist) found the song incredible.
Did you create any parameters for the vocals to be highlighted in this way?
I've been a musician for a long time and I know that we can direct certain tracks during production, but here I see something natural and that "talks" very well with the instrumental, I don't really know how it was done but it is very clean, great.

First of all, thank you for the kind words.
We think that Giulia is getting better on every session, and of course, she did most of the job, I mean, her voice is good as it is, but she works hard to use it in the best way possible.

However, we wanted that everything sounded very natural and smooth, so during the recordings, we focused to pursue this goal in every single take: about this, we probably got a lot of help from the years of experience behind Fagio’s career as a producer.

We also recorded at the “TimeTrack Studios”, which is a very good place to work in this way, and we got many good suggestions from Roberto Laghi: he is our mix guy since “The Attraction of Opposites” and is one of the best professionals in the world... he did an amazing job also this time.

8 - A subject that is undoubtedly discussed by many musicians is Streaming ... I believe that you make use of digital platforms because of the ease, but do you like purchasing materials? I recently had contact with some albums in digipack, slipcase versions (including a Mediabook from HammerFall very beautiful, a format that you don't see often here in Brazil) and I came across people asking me: do you like it? isn't digital better? ... I make a collection of Rock / Metal DVDs (I have a little more 700) and even finding new devices that work with these media is complicated.
Could it be that the trend is the end of physical material? In your country is it also complicated to acquire such things?

We don’t think so. I mean, of course, streaming is the present and the future of music and as a band, you want to adapt to the trend, but we think people will always love physical material.

There are still a lot of fans and collectors in the world that want to get the complete experience of holding in their hands the digipack and the booklet of an album: it’s more fulfilling and it’s also a way to feel closer to the band.

Maybe music in physical material will diminish, but probably it won’t die completely.

9 - To finish, I would like to know what you have heard that served as inspiration for the current work ... If you want to recommend names of your scene, or even bands that are part of your playlists; feel free.
The fun fact is that we often listen to music very far from metal and from what we play! Do you really want the names? Here they are: Billie Eilish, The Weekend, Dua Lipa, Drake, Daft Punk, Flume, Vulfpek, Ludovico Einaudi, The Cinematic Orchestra, Black Pumas, Andy Timmons, etc.

These kinds of listenings were useful to compose an interesting combination of genres and maybe also more fascinating melodies or instrumental parts. However, we still have loads of rock and metal bands in our background, both classics and new stuff: Tesseract, Gojira, Faith No More, Korn, Haken, Protest The Hero, Soilwork, In Flames, Jinjer, Stone Sour, etc.  About our scene…well, I think the Italian scene has many great bands that are waiting to be discovered, especially speaking of female voices.

For example, you can check our drummer Simon playlist, “Italian Female Metal Voices”: you may discover something quite interesting in it. ;)

10 - Thank you very much for the opportunity and attention, you can always count on us ... would you like to leave a final message?
Thanks to you for the opportunity! We just want to thank all the people who are supporting and following us, we recommend to stay safe and to have trust in music, it could be a great friend on your side!
